Jaipur’s Priyanshi Tells You Why Passion Qualifies You Better Than A Degree

Sometimes, reality comes in the way of your dreams, and you are forced to put them on hold. But what if after having enough of reality, you lived in your own dream?
24-year-old Priyanshi Agarwal is one of those people who first graduated from Xavier’s School, Jaipur, cleared her CA in 2014, secured a fabulous job at Barclays and then quit her job to establish her own clothing line named
When you are designing something, where do your ideas come from?
Since childhood, I was one of those girls who seemed to have a firm hold on their fashion sense. I have it today too as I have frequently been complimented for my choice of dressing in the office. Even my parents have constantly praised me for how fluidly I carry myself. It is all in the mind – the designs come from my creativity and imagination.
I crave creativity more than a technicality. Clothes are my best friends, chuck diamonds (for now).
Why did you pursue CA in the first place?
In 11th, I was good at Math and Accountancy. When I was confused as to what I should do after 12th, CA turned out to be an easily approachable option. By the middle of this course, my interest had not wavered, but I realized that I could not go on doing CA my entire life. Nevertheless, I cleared it!
When I broke the news to my family that CA did not engage me much, their advice to me was, “Don’t stop pursuing what you already are because you also know it is an asset.” And, I can’t disagree. It has given me respect and supported me financially. People take me seriously because of it.
What did your job after completing CA entail?
I was dealing with people from the United Kingdom. I aided them with their taxes and helped them solve their taxation problems. It was completely technical.
Tell us about your workplace?
It’s not a boutique, actually. It is just a room in my own house where I have put up all the dresses designed by me. My word is predominantly done online, and I also enjoy displaying my work in several exhibitions. I design, and I send it to get manufactured.
“Inspiration to design is present everywhere. My brand is constantly racking to design, miss and match and come up with innovative and new stuff. The Internet helps a lot in that department. I research extensively about anything I am about to design.”
You have never actually studied fashion designing?
No. I just did a 3-month crash course in fashion designing from a college, and that’s it. Even though I learned many technical terms abbot fashion from that course, my mind was a free bird and the curriculum was useful but not just for me.
I studied from YouTube videos, books and lots of Fashion TV. I also sought help from fabric dealers and tailors.
I believe that you don’t need a degree to achieve anything. If you are resolute and passionate, no obstacle can stand in your way. Choose a path and start walking on it with dreams of success only.
“In the future, I want to open a big store that is a go-to place for ANY girl. I want to make it trendy, reliable and affordable. “
Something that inspires you?
Sabyasachi work. I cannot get over those designs.
Also, SOMEONE that inspires me when it comes to fashion is Jenifer Aniston. She is so comfortable in her own skin. Anything that she wears glows on her body type.
Yes, we love you, Jen. I am secretly bribing Priyanshi so that she can ask her fabric dealers to manufacture all the dresses Rachel has wore on Friends.
ONE CAN DREAM OKAY??
Any marketing strategy that you would not mind suggesting to people in this field?
The Internet is your best friend. Use it to the fullest. Make good use of your contacts too.
The fashion line is filled with aspiring fashion designers. Ever felt cut throat competition due to that?
Every second, yes. There are people who are doing hundred times more than I am and it just spurs me to action too! It’s not competition if I am getting inspired by them. Not having a fashion designing degree feels like a hindrance sometimes but it’s okay.
If I ask you to window shop RIGHT NOW, where would you go?
Zara! Also, whenever I have completed shopping at Forever 21, I just roam around the store one last time, thinking, “I hope I did not leave anything good behind.” It’s mandatory!
“Sometimes, I wished that my brand would become a star overnight. That did not happen, of course. I had had disappointing days when I was devoid of resources-no tailor, no fabric dealer. At that time, I made wish of having a fashion designing degree, but that’s all cool now. But CYU was incorporated in June and rose online in July. So, it is too early to say anything about where it will go.”
If I ask you to imagine a dress that you would design for me right now, what would you design?
A body-hugging gown for you, my lady! It has a big slit at the right side, and it is only one shouldered. It is either maroon or cherry red.
“Since my father is into event management, he was all up for me going into the creative line as well. He even said that if I was not happy doing a job, I was free to quit it.”
What is your creative process like?
A design comes into my head vaguely. I then look up on the internet to help me take this design to the next level.
Then, I start thinking about what fabric would suit this design perfectly. I have the design in my head, but the online world helps me put it on the paper.
I retrieve the appropriate fabric and the process of manufacturing starts. Sometimes, the tailor may not understand my sketch so I show him a picture slightly similar to my sketch, and he gets it then.
One dress that is sitting in your mini boutique that you want someone to buy already because it is so fabulous?
A white floral maxi dress with a soft and silky fabric. I am into maxi dresses a lot. They highlight your curves, and they are for every body type out there. It is a convenient and beautiful piece of clothing.
Any mishap you have made as a designer?
I am proud of every mistake that I have made. I released a collection of clothing which was based on tie and dye. I got a lot of appreciation for that, but I am mot exactly proud of those designs now.
CYU will be an integral exhibition in at Diggi Palace, Jaipur in October. Priyanshi is also involved in pairing up with e-commerce sites like Voonik and Design Theatre.
