Dear Piggy Chops, Let’s Talk About The Causes Of The “Real Issues”

Priyanka Chopra is known for being very vocal about her opinion on sexism, the gender wage gap in the entertainment industry and women empowerment.

In the recent wake of Salman Khan’s controversial comment, Priyanka Chopra was one of the many Bollywood stars who remained silent.

When asked to comment on it during an interview with Khaleej Times, she said the following:

“First of all, you should be asking the person who made this comment. It is very important for the media and for me as women to use our power and talk about the real problem which is happening in India every single day to so many women instead of pushing a controversy for a headline, which is unfair. There is so much reality happening like a brutal rape case in Bihar took place – why is no one talking about the issue. A lot has been said about the Salman issue. I don’t want to add to the noise. I would rather bring notice on real issues… The real problem is us talking about how to treat our women better in India and how to treat women better generally.”

Okay, we love Priyanka Chopra for speaking up about feminism-related issues in the past. But as far as this interview is concerned, was a diplomatic answer really required?

She said that the people and media should address the real issue. But what causes the real issue?

Let’s see, I have a whole list ready:

1. Bollywood: The lead guy follows the girl around until she says yes. This mentality makes men think that it is acceptable to follow girls around and tease them.

2. Gender Gap: Differentiating between the two genders can be one of the reasons that men develop a superiority complex.

3. Few Convictions: India’s conviction rate is no more than 26 percent. The passing of a proposed new sexual assault law has been delayed for seven years!

4. Encouraging rape victims to compromise: Rape victims are often encouraged by village elders and clan councils to “compromise” with the family of accused and drop charges or even to marry the attacker.

5. Mentality: One of the reasons that can be blamed for offences like these is our backward mentality. Oh, she was raped because she was wearing jeans or she was assaulted because she was roaming the city alone at later hours.

Anything or anyone (*cough* Salman Khan *cough*) that follows the ways of the patriarchy causes the ‘real‘ issue.
