JWB Has Fallen In Love With 19 Y.O. Shivani Javeri Who Waterpaints Artists That Inspire Her

Nudes drawn by America’s noted artist Wendy Artin are my favorite. But when I stumbled upon Shivani Javeri’s work, I thought I found the Indian Wendy.

You should see how the various water colors find their way through the specter of emotions when Shivani paints. The flow looks natural making the job of the paint brush look minimal. Sometimes it is the vibrant mix of purple, red and yellow. Other times, it’s just the gold talking to the white canvas.

Shivani told me from where, at the mere age of 19, she got the spontaneous vibes of doing it magically. Every single time.

Let’s introduce you to our readers!

I’m 19, from Mumbai, pursuing Design Studies in Bangalore at Srishti School of Art Design and Technology. I’m very close to my family, and I have this brilliant set of four girlfriends who have been my pillars ever since forever. I have been that girl who draws since I was a child. Every afternoon I used to take my box of art supplies out and fill in the pages of those small red drawing books. Now, I indulge in all sorts of paintings, photography, and I’ve found interest in cooking, going for meals alone and reading my favorite books. Also, I am an Instagram person.

Who/what is your driving force?

I started working with wet mediums in 11th grade and have been practicing it since then. I feel my driving force is seeing people around me do inspiring things. I love it when they keep themselves busy with different hobbies. Also, of course, the late night thoughts and food have become the major drive in my life.

You have a thing for…?

Artists. I draw artists who inspire me.

To this crazy fashion blogger who carries herself like a boss! @beingnita you're inspiring me to grow my hair back again! Hope you like this! ❤❤😄 . Alcoholic markers on non alcoholic paper. DM me for placing an order ❤ #markers #art #drawing #illustration #beingnita #vinithashetty #artfido #artgram #artoninstagram #artist #spotlightonartists #skrien #brustro #tumblr #lookkristina

You recently painted using makeup products. How did that come up?

So I was in the middle of a very artistic conversation, and then suddenly the idea struck. I have a very random thought process, and I wanted to try a medium that we usually don’t use for painting. Now how do I make something I love making, without using the same medium? MAKE UP!

So I painted with make up this time and ended up with black lips as I kissed the hair hahaha. I think I'm going to do a series of these or at least I hope I will 👅👄 . #makeup #art #portrait #makeupart

Is it fun to convert your housemates into your subjects? Tell me about the most interesting one!

“Karthika” was the first time I painted a housemate of mine. It has got the most interesting story behind. Every time Karthika, my housemate, came back home, she would take a look at it and smile. In a way, I was making someone’s day happier!

Tell about your paintings like ‘Sleepy girl’ and ‘Le bed.’ They intrigue me.

I think ‘Sleepy girl’ is a very lousy picture because I was too sleepy but I wanted to paint anyway. The ‘Le bed’ series is based on some self-portraits. I wanted to sketch some semi-nude figures but couldn’t find the exact references, so I posed for it.

You also run a food blog with your girlfriends. Whatte thing to do!

Fun fact, it was created over a sleepover with my friends Mahima and Shreeya. Gosh, we love food! We wanted a catchy name, and curated ‘Ek Thi Thali’. Although there are times when we forget to click pictures of the food, and gobble it down within seconds. Humans! It’s been going well so far.

I see a lot of faces and hands covered in paint on your Instagram page. Relieving?

I’m messy when I paint, and it’s definitely THE most relieving thing for me.

From painting sleepovers to painting trips. We've come a long way nush 💜 #GoaPaintingDiaries #travelartists #projectmad

Is the work ‘Insanities’ about a bride going through physical abuse?

I love how you have interpreted this! It’s a different approach! That’s what I love about art; it is so open to interpretation. I was trying out a different pallet of colors this time, but you can look at it and say that the world has two kinds of people, the one who faff and the one who sometimes faff, and I think I’m edging towards the second one at the moment.

“What if the natural instinct of people was to sleep instead of cry when they were sad?” How often do you write?

I only write when something is bothering me. So I guess this was one of those moments.

I'm falling to pieces

Why is it that red happens a lot in your work?

Umm..may be I’ve run out of neon pink! Kidding! Primary shades are the ones I rely on 90% of the times to make other shades. Hence red tends to hit you in the eye.

What has been the most powerful statement for you?

“You are very inspiring.” When somebody tells me this, I feel powerful within.

Talk about your commercial collaboration(s).

Every artist can sign up and sell his stuff on Cupick. I’m very grateful to this shopping website to have featured me in the Big Bad List of over 150 Female Artists and Illustrators in India, and also the multiple features on instagram!

I have also collaborated with Project MAD from Mumbai to paint a wall outside Dockyard Road Station with a lot of other artists. And with the same team even at a cafe in Vagator, Goa. These two were the most public I’ve ever gotten!

You did a Tara Lynn. Like her?

I worship her. How can you not paint such a terrific personality? She is all about body positivity. I absolutely love how she carries herself, and I feel all them ladies should flaunt their curves. She is, what I call, sexy.

Painted @taralynn again, a little my way! Hope you like this you gorgeous womannnnn! ❤❤ . #taralynn #acrylics #artistsdrop #art_empire #art_spotlight #artoninstagram #instaart

How is nudity embraced in the art world?

From the start of the world to the beginning of our life. Haven’t we all been naked? Nudity in a way that has been the most vulnerable but the most dominant side of us. Bodies and faces are so expressive; I tend to come back to them all the time!

some bum. #nudestudy #artfido

What’s your vision for the coming years?

I’m learning to be patient and letting the road take me wherever it has to! I do wish to have my work exhibited in an art space someday, but that’s all about it for now.
